It’s that time of year when you should change the batteries in you smoke detectors. While you are checking things, check the date on the detector. Typically detector lifetimes are 10 years. Remember your CO and combustible gas detectors too. If you happened to have the 10 year versions,that the batteries are not replaceable, at least press the test button.

Everyone is invited — Club members or not, hams or not. As with all of our activities this is Family Friendly! There will be free hot dogs and burgers, along with chips, soft drinks and condiments provided by the Club. If you wish, you may bring food to share, but it’s not a requirement. This will be a wonderful opportunity to spend some time with your ham radio friends, old and new. Please plan on attending.

This event a good way to get some activity on your home HF station or even take your mobile station out to see how well it works. This is not a contest but an all mode event to locate and contact as many of the listed Thirteen Original Colonies special event stations. There is also a special event station located in England. They always have a very nice certificate available, if you are interested in such.
With the official arrival of Summer on June 20, I expect most of us feel that considering the high temperatures and severe weather we’ve experienced, it seems like Summer has been around for awhile already.
A couple weather issues that we need to keep in mind are lightning and the effects high temperatures. Often lightning concerns take a back seat relative to our activities but the saying “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors” really should be followed.
Along with lightning concerns we need to take into consideration the high temperatures that can effect people of all ages. Parents and grand-parents need to be especially aware of the high temperatures when they have children in the vehicle. In our hectic world it is too easy to get caught up in thinking ahead of ourselves. Try to keep in the current moment to avoid any tragedies! Also remember folks who might need extra attention during high temperatures and severe weather.
Try to be aware of your location to be able to articulate where you are in the event a 911 call is made. Many 911 centers don’t have the cell phone location ability.
It is with deep sadness we report the passing of Paul Silinsky K3PS.
Dr. Paul Stephen Silinsky K3PS of Ashland, Ohio, formerly of DuBois Pennsylvania, died following a brief illness on Saturday, May 5, 2018. He was Lecturer at The Ohio State University — Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster, Ohio, and served as Adjunct Faculty at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio and North Central State College in Mansfield, Ohio. He managed the family business, Keystone Electric Motor Repair Co. in DuBois, before moving to Ohio.
He was born in DuBois May 12, 1948, the son of Stephen A. and Connie I. (Zaykosky) Silinsky. He was a graduate of Central Catholic High School in DuBois, Pennsylvania, and graduated Cum Laude from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a BS in Physics. He received Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from West Virginia State University for his work in Solid State Physics.
He retired from the United States Naval Reserve with the rank of Commander, and served in the Civil Air Patrol as a pilot and Squadron Commander, retiring as Lieutenant Colonel.
He was a licensed Radio Amateur beginning in 1962 with the callsign KN3ZDR, and later K3ZDR and K3PS. He was a founding member of the Quad-County Amateur Radio Club in DuBois, and was a long-serving officer, performing the duties of President, Secretary, and Treasurer during the first 20 years of the club’s history.
He was responsible for the Quad-County repeater, WR3AGV (later K3PS) and served as an officer of the Western Pennsylvania Repeater Council.
He is survived by his wife, Tonda Nalle Silinsky, and is remembered by his many students and friends. Private funeral arrangements in Ashland, Ohio are incomplete.
The Brookville YMCA Adventure race is set for June 2, 2018.
Chuck Shaffer, KC3EAJ has requested amateurs to provide public service communications for this race. His main focus is the orienteering course between Millcreek & Frozen Toe.
The actual race covers eighty four miles and there are opportunities for as many ham operators to participate as arrive to assist. Chuck will find a place for you.
If you have assisted with the northern leg of the Baker Ultra Challenge, you will recognize much of the terrain. There are safety checkpoints, and orienteering points that he would like covered.
The race starts at 7 a.m. with an 8-mile run in a loop around the Millcreek Boat Launch area just outside of Strattanville.
From there, the opening runner tags off to a swimmer who goes on a 2-mile round trip before tagging to the next teammate who bikes 23 miles from Millcreek to Cook Forest State Park at the Clarion River bridge.
The biker then tags a kayaker who boats back to Millcreek some 12 miles away. An orienteer duo or individual awaits the Kayaker there for a 10-12 mile trip to find three checkpoints in the forest between Millcreek and Frozen Toe, which is just north of Corsica.
The final stage starts at Frozen Toe where the successful orienteer team tags off to the anchor leg, who finishes the day on a 9.5-mile run into Brookville and the finish line at the YMCA.
Hams will meet at the Millcreek boat access on Millcreek road, (T-572) approx. 2 miles off Fisher road (SR1011) outside Strattanville borough in Clarion County. Time 1030 A.M.
