It’s that time of year when you should change the batteries in you smoke detectors. While you are checking things, check the date on the detector. Typically detector lifetimes are 10 years. Remember your CO and combustible gas detectors too. If you happened to have the 10 year versions,that the batteries are not replaceable, 
at least press the test button.
Here are some statistics from the National Fire Protection Association:
- Three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms.
- More than one-third (38 percent) of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present.
- The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.
