The Quad-County Amateur Radio Club will hold an online meeting August 12, 2020 at 7:00 PM. In the interest of maintaining a healthy environment for you, our members and guests, we feel the remote webinar is the optimal method to conduct meetings given today’s circumstances.
An available email list of members has been sent a notice which has all of the needed information to join the meeting by computer only. (Cell phone connection is no longer available.)
It may be advantageous to use voice only instead of both voice and video to eliminate drop-outs due to bandwidth limitations. Video is not required to participate.
If you have not received the email notice, email Bryan at: wa3ufn@arrl.net to advise so the information can be emailed.
Due to the 50 minute limitation, imposed by the webinar service provider, no program can be presented.
Strong, damaging winds and/or large hail are occurring or will occur shortly. When a severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for your area, move inside a sturdy structure immediately and stay away from windows and doors. Acting early helps save lives!
A severe thunderstorm WATCH means BE PREPARED for the potential of strong, damaging winds and/or large hail typically within the next 3-7 hours of the watch issuance.
When there is a severe thunderstorm watch, pay extra close attention to the weather and be ready to act. Preparing ahead of time helps save lives!
Due to technical issues, the time and information announcement system that was operating on the 147.315 repeater is operating on the 442.95 repeater as of February 20. With the increasing popularity of UHF, we feel that the move will benefit just as many amateurs in our area. Additionally, handheld coverage is often better on UHF.

MEMO TO: Pennsylvania Amateur Radio Operators
FROM: Your Pennsylvania ARRL Leadership Team (includes the Eastern and Western PA Sections!)
During a conference this morning with the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Senate Transportation Committee, we learned that partly as a result of our efforts, Senator Farnese of Philadelphia will be introducing an amendment to this bill that will exempt Amateur Radio Operators from its prohibition on the use of Amateur Radio equipment while mobile.
The committee’s executive director is unsure of the timing for a future vote on this bill but feels certain that if Amateur Radio Operators in Pennsylvania communicate their support for the amendment, it will contribute to a successful outcome.
Senator Farnese’s staff is currently preparing the language of the amendment following input from your ARRL team. Once the Senate includes this exemption and passes the bill, it will go to a conference committee where the differences in the House and Senate versions must be ironed out. So, your support for this amendment is crucial. Contact your State Representative and State Senator and ask them to support the amendment to HB37 exempting Amateur Radio Operators.
Use this link https://www.legis.state.pa.us/ to find out who represents you in the Senate and House. Contact them and simply ask them to support the exemption amendment.
We’ll post more updates as the bill progresses.
Even though the hurricane will likely have little to no effect on the WPA area, remember that there is a possibility that people in the effected area may be trying to contact family or friends relative their well-being. Consider monitoring the hurricane net frequencies of 14.325 MHz & 7.268 MHz. I have not heard any traffic so far but they may pass the messages using the ARRL Radiogram message form or the ICS 213 message form. These are the same forms we covered in the training programs at the Club meetings.

SKYWARN™ Recognition Day (SRD) 2018 takes place on Saturday, December 1, from 0000 until 2400 UTC (11/30 1900 – 12/1 1900 Eastern). Developed in 1999 by the National Weather Service (NWS) and ARRL, SRD celebrates the contributions that SKYWARN volunteers make to the NWS mission, the protection of life and property. During SKYWARN™ Recognition Day, special event stations will be on the air from NWS offices, contacting radio amateurs around the world.
The object of SRD is for amateur stations to exchange contact
information with as many National Weather Service stations as
possible on 80, 40, 20, 15, 10, 6, and 2 meters, plus 70 centimeters.
Contacts via repeaters are permitted. Stations should exchange call
sign, signal report, and location plus a quick description of the
weather at your location (e.g., sunny, partly cloudy, windy, rainy,
etc.). EchoLink and IRLP nodes, including the Voice over Internet
Protocol Weather Net (VoIP-WX),
are expected to be active as well.
SSB, FM, AM, RTTY, CW, and PSK31 are modes that can be utilized
during the event. While working digital modes, special event stations
will append “NWS” to their call signs (e.g., N0A/NWS). It’s
suggested that during SRD operations a non-NWS volunteer serve as a
station control operator.
